Video Highlights: A Conversation with Chile's Changemakers

In just a few years, Chile’s startup ecosystem has transformed the country into the entrepreneurial hub of Latin America. In July 2015, the Chilean changemakers behind this transformation visited Lebanon for a study tour, knowledge exchange, and dynamic transfer of ideas and actions that promote innovation.

The Chilean delegates include leaders and entrepreneurs from Startup Chile, Santiago MakerSpace, SociaLab, and the brand-new Ideas Factory, and on July 23 they shared their experiences with Lebanese startup and innovation ecosystem stakeholders in a public forum.

In July 2015, one of the winning teams from the Open Innovation Week Startup Challenge traveled to London for a study tour of its entrepreneurship ecosystem. In this interview, Emile Arayes, Co-Founder of Modeo Systems, recaps the study tour and explains how access to London's FabLab and other spaces is helping him launch his business.

The study tour was organized by the UK Lebanon Tech Hub in collaboration with the World Bank and other stakeholders. It is one of many activities supporting the objectives of the Mobile Internet Ecosystem Project; learn more at

Video and Resources: Open Innovation Week

From 20-28 February, the innovation, design and entrepreneurship community in Beirut convened for a week of open source workshops, community-organized innovation events, and a start-up competition. Open Innovation Week, hosted by Alt City, Bader Accelerator, and the World Bank in collaboration with many local stakeholders, introduced open source tools and techniques that support innovation.

From the World Bank blog: Building skills for more technology entrepreneurship in Lebanon

The World Bank collaborated with local Lebanese technology communities to host Open Innovation Week in Beirut at the end of February, bringing speakers from prominent US-based institutions, such as Google, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts International Technology (MIT) for “tinkering with a purpose”. That purpose was to harness the power of open source tools to fix problems and build up their technology and entrepreneurship skills. The event was part of the Mobile Internet Ecosystem Project (MIEP) launched by the World Bank and Lebanese government to invigorate Lebanese entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic competitiveness.

In October 2014, stakeholders from Lebanon's mobile internet ecosystem convened for a collaborative workshop to co-design a Mobile Innovation Hub - or MIHub - to support entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation in Lebanon.
